Our latest project - a new patio!
We try to do one big project on the house each year. Our little budding walker has dictated which project come next - the deck. Or rather, removal of the deck. I'm not sure when the deck was put on this house but it is in BAD shape. The boards are splintering and nails are popping up. Even Lucy hates walking across it and practically tiptoes to get to the yard. We also have a gazebo, that while it seems like a great idea, just takes up space and makes the yard seem smaller and crowded. We've gone back and forth all winter on what to do. We thought about just removing the top boards and replacing them, keeping the foot print of the current deck and underlying structure. We thought about removing it all and pouring a concrete patio. In the end we decided to remove everything and lay a paver brick patio.
The original owners of our house were a retired couple so they spent a lot of time gardening. When we first looked at the house the yard was amazing. Of course, we have not been able to keep up with the weeds and plants in the slightest so now it's an overgrown jungle. So while we're ripping up the deck we thought we might as well have the landscapers tear out the large planting bed and replace with sod as well as remove two trees. We want TJ to be able to enjoy the backyard and have room for him to run around and play. We also don't want to do any more yard work than mowing!
Work starts tomorrow so I'll be updating the progress each night. It will hopefully all be done in a week to 10 days. For now, here are the before pictures.
I'm convinced this was a DIY project - who in the world would use 1x2s for a deck surface??
